Pista, commonly known as pistachios, are edible seeds from the Pistacia vera tree. They grow within a hard shell that splits open when ripe, revealing the tender green and purple-tinged kernel inside. These nuts have a unique, mildly sweet and nutty taste and are widely used in cooking as well as eaten on their own. In India, pista is a popular ingredient in sweets like kheer, kulfi, halwa, falooda, and barfi as well as in savory dishes and snacks.
Nutritional Profile:
Pistachios are densely packed with nutrients. A typical serving (about 28 g) provides healthy fats (mostly unsaturated), dietary fiber, plant-based protein, and a range of essential vitamins and minerals such as vitamin B6, potassium, phosphorus, copper, and manganese. They also contain important antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin, which support eye health.
